In 1957, Picasso executed a number of sculptural sketches in which discs meet at an angle around a central bar. The play with geometric planes around a vertical axis is repeated in this painting of his wife, Jacqueline Roquefort. Picasso’s experiments with making flat sculptures is evident here. The artist produced small models using folded paper, cardboard and sheet metal, thus recalling his use of these material in his early Cubist sculptures. Picasso’s Tete de femme is housed in Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Sweden.
